Family History in the Wichita Eagle!

In this week’s Neighbors section, the Wichita Eagle published a terrific article about a family history project shared at the Afro-American Special Interest Group meeting last week.  The project itself is really cool — tracing several generations of a family with photographs — and the article is pretty good, too.

For some reason, the Eagle doesn’t post Neighbors content online, so you’ll have to find a paper copy…or come by the library, where we’ll have it on the bulletin board.

New Special Interest Group — Power Up Your Genealogy!

Want to get more strategic and organized about your genealogy research this year?  Need to find new genealogy software? We do too, so we’re starting a new Special Interest Group!  The Power Up Your Genealogy SIG will meet once a month, on the second Tuesday at 1:30pm, to discuss and debate a variety of topics of interest to all genealogists, beginner to advanced.  Our provisional monthly schedule is:

Feb: Genealogy Software
Mar: Organizing Your Files, Paper and Digital
Apr: Online Research Toolkit
May: Genealogy Road Trips
Jun: Digitizing Photos
Jul: Research Goals and Process
Aug: Genealogy Education
Sep: Citing Your Sources
Oct: Interviewing Relatives
Nov: Sharing Your Research
Dec: Taking Stock and Looking Forward

Led by MHGS Librarian Julia Langel, each meeting will rely on sharing and discussion of experiences and resources.  We hope you’ll bring an idea, web link, book, article, question, example or story to share.   We’ll take good notes, make copies and lists, and share the results.

Please join us!  Our first meeting will be Tuesday, February 9, at 1:30. Our topic will be Genealogy Software

Dillons Community Rewards Program

As you may know, Dillons makes contributions to community organizations.  Every time you swipe your Plus card, Dillons gives a tiny fraction of the money you spent to the organization you specify in your account.

You have to sign up for this every year.

To sign up, go to dillons.com/communityrewards. You can sign in using either your plus card number or your phone number.  Search for Midwest Historical & Genealogical Society, and choose it.  Then, for the next year, every time you shop for groceries, you’ll be supporting us.

Thanks — Every little bit helps!
