{"id":1060,"date":"2016-01-20T19:00:51","date_gmt":"2016-01-21T01:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mhgswichita.org\/wp\/?page_id=1060"},"modified":"2025-09-30T13:21:24","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T18:21:24","slug":"maps","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mhgswichita.org\/wp\/online-resources\/maps\/","title":{"rendered":"Maps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone loves maps! \u00a0There are lots of sources of Wichita and Sedgwick County maps, both online and on paper.<\/p>\n<p>In Wichita, you can find map collections at MHGS, the Wichita Public Library and WSU. \u00a0If a map hasn&#8217;t been digitized, it&#8217;s time for a field trip to the library!<\/p>\n<p>MHGS has our maps cataloged in our main library catalog. \u00a0You can see a list <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.mhgswichita.org\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-search.pl?idx=&amp;q=sedgwick+maps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Wichita Public Library also has their maps listed in their catalog. You can see a list <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.wichitalibrary.org\/Polaris\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=1.1033.0.0.6&#038;type=Keyword&#038;term=sedgwick%20maps&#038;by=KW&#038;sort=RELEVANCE&#038;limit=TOM=*&#038;query=&#038;page=0&#038;searchid=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wichita State University Special Collections has an extensive historical map collection. \u00a0Some are digitized and online; more are not. \u00a0Both kinds are indexed <a href=\"http:\/\/specialcollections.wichita.edu\/collections\/maps\/search.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Kansas Historical Society has an extensive map collection, but not very many have been digitized yet. \u00a0View a description of their holdings <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kshs.org\/p\/map-collections\/13863\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are digitized maps all over the web. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a sampling&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The Kansas Department of Transportation offers both current and historical official state and county maps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksdot.gov\/about\/our-organization\/divisions\/planning-and-development\/kansas-maps-and-gis-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Kansas has the <a href=\"http:\/\/luna.ku.edu:8180\/luna\/servlet\/view\/all\/where\/Sedgwick%20County?sort=Identifier,Area,Citation,Classification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanborn Insurance Maps<\/a> for 1884 &#8211; 1914 Sedgwick County here. (If you don&#8217;t know the Sanborn Maps, they show an enormous amount of detail about the buildings and layout of a city.)<\/p>\n<p>The University of Texas\u00a0Perry-Casta\u00f1eda Library<br \/>\nMap Collection includes several historical Kansas maps <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.lib.utexas.edu\/maps\/kansas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Geography at the University of Alabama also has digitized historic Kansas maps <a href=\"http:\/\/alabamamaps.ua.edu\/historicalmaps\/us_states\/kansas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Library of Congress website has Kansas maps <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/maps\/?q=kansas&amp;st=gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The David Ramsey <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidrumsey.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">site<\/a> is a marvelous source of digitized maps. \u00a0There isn&#8217;t much specifically for Wichita or Sedgwick County, but you should check it out anyway. \u00a0There is a lovely map of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidrumsey.com\/luna\/servlet\/detail\/RUMSEY~8~1~255224~5519670:Edwards-Map-of-the-City-of-Wichita,?sort=Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No&amp;qvq=w4s:\/what%2FProperty%2BOwnership;q:wichita;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&amp;mi=3&amp;trs=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1882 Wichita<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone loves maps! \u00a0There are lots of sources of Wichita and Sedgwick County maps, both online and on paper.
