INTRODUCTORY

"He that writes,
Or makes a feast, more certainly invites
His judges, than his friends; there's not a guest,
But will find something wanting or ill drest."

After many weeks of hard, patient labor, we place before our patrons the WICHITA CITY DIRECTORY FOR 1892. We hope the book will be found as nearly perfect as it is possible to make one. Very few persons have the least idea of the great labor and the difficulties of making a directory, and they will generally notice the imperfections and speak of them while its good qualities will pass unnoticed. In our canvass of the city we knocked at the door of every residence and called at every place of business in the city–in some cases several times. As an illustration of the difficulties of getting all the names for a directory the following case may be cited. At a certain residence our ring at the door bell brought no response. A "call back" was made, and in a few days the visit was repeated with the same result. This continued on different days until five unsuccessful visits had been made. The lady of this house then chanced to meet one of our men and said to him: "You are getting up the city directory. Your man has been to the house five or six times. I saw him each time from the upper window but thought he was some peddler and did not go to the door." The husband was out of the city and but for this chance meeting and remark the name would not have been taken, notwithstanding our great efforts to get it.
The book appears this year a little later in the season than formerly. In the first place we hesitated a little about getting it out at all. Our experience is that there is a great deal of hard work and little pay in it. We do not care to do the job for what there is in it now, and only do it with the hope that as Wichita grows, and her business increases, that it may then pay us to get out a Directory. Then again we waited until the hottest of the weather had gone by. Next year we want to get the book out earlier, and it may be well to suggest here that the price will have to be increased. Until last year no directory had every been sold here for less than $4.00. Last year we made the price $3.00. We find by experience that the work cannot be done for this price. Think of a Directory with its limited sale–a book of nearly six hundred pages–for $3.00!
It may be noted that this book contains two hundred more pages and fifteen hundred more names than the Directory last year.

We hope each year, with the experience and knowledge of the work that we now have, to give our patrons a good that will meet all of their reasonable expectations.
Thanking you for your patronage we are
Very Respectfully,
THE LEADER DIRECTORY CO.

Note: MAIN STREET running North and South, is the dividing line of all streets running East and West, while Douglas Avenue is the dividing line of all streets running North and South. By the decimal system of numbering houses adopted in this city, one hundred numbers are given to each square. These numbers begin at Main Street and increase East and West; and at Douglas Avenue and increase North and South.
A City Ordinance provides that the odd numbers of houses shall be on the South side of all streets running East and West, and on the West side of all streets running North and South.
