MHGS RESEARCH LIBRARY

The Midwest Historical and Genealogical Library, located at 1203 North Main, Wichita, KS, is the largest Society owned library in the state. MHGS holdings include over 21,000 volumes and issues of books, magazines, manuscripts, collections and CD-ROMS. These are varied and include many items of genuine interest to the beginning genealogist as well as those farther along in their research. WE DO NOT INTERLIBRARY LOAN.

Books are shelved by numbers for ease in locating particular areas of interest. You may find a number "R 210-6". States are given a specific number and "210" refers to the state of Kansas. The "6" is merely the 6th book accessed for Kansas. The state list appears below.

G - Genealogies (filed by primary surname)

I - General Genealogical information (guide books, source books, etc.)

KC + Co. # - Kansas Cemeteries (filed alpabetical by county name) Watch for tombstone inscriptions within the counties

P- Photo Collection

R - 600 - General U.S. (How-to books, etc.)

R - 605 - New England Area (without specific state designation)

R - 610 - Lineage Societies (DAR, SAR, Mayflower)

R - 630 - Ethnic (African-American, Native American Indian)

R - 640 - Religion (Quakers, Mennonites)

R - 650 - Immigrants, Naturalization, Passenger Lists

The Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society Library, located at 1203 North Main, Wichita, KS , is open for research on Tuesday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Call (316) 264-3611 for holiday closings.) We do not interlibrary loan.

Midwest Historical and Genealogical Library staff will do research for a fee of $ 5.00 per hour (US Dollars only) from our library holdings, including our MHGS publications.
